NEGOTIATIONS IN CHINA
BRITISH MINISTER AT NANKING. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, March 3. Sir Miles Wedderspoon Lampson, British Minister to China, lias arrived .at Nanking for discussion, of the question of extra-territoriality. Preliminary conversations with the Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ur. C. T. Wang, have been begun. It is hoped a settlement of the whole question may result. The present British policy m China il.ased on the memorandum of December, 1926, recognising that with the stabilisation of political conditions extra-ter-ritoriality, which within the past oO years had undergone considerable modifications, could not be maintained. Negotiations were interrupted in 19-9 owing to internal troubles culminating in civil war. but in September last Sir Miles Lampson presented a draft agreement, The Chinese Government replied in December with a counter-draft. The present negotiations have been begun on the assumption that the Chinese Government now controls the internal situation. _
