Mr R. J. O ’Dea, of Hawera, who is a student of the Auckland University, lias received advice that he has passed his LL.M. degree with second-class honours.

Miss F. Penhall, who is leaving for the Salvation Army training college next week, was given a farewell social at Eltham last night by members and friends of the Salvation Army. Miss Penhall has passed all her examinations in Red Cross work and is desirous of | entering the social branch of the Army. A long and valuable career of service among the Marist Brothers of Australia and New Zealand was brought to a close by the death last evening of the . Rev. Brother Basil, first Director of the Sacred Heart College, Auckland, ! and senior adviser to the order, states a Wellington Press Association message. Brother Basil, who was 78 years of age, died at the Marist Training College, Tualcau, where he had lived in retirement since the celebration of his golden jubilee as a Marist brother in May of last year. Mr A. Shelton, who is retiring from the position of Chief Postmaster at Palmerston North at the end of the current month, joined the Post and Telegraph Department at Christchurch at j the age of 13 years. After being a postman and working in the mailroom, Mr Shelton was transferred to Auckland in 1914, where he was employed as a shipping clerk until 1920. From Auckland Mr Shelton was transferred to Napier as supervisor of postal branches, and from there to the position of superintendent of mails at Wellington. After occupying the position of relieving officer, Mr Shelton was appointed Chief Postmaster at New Plymouth in 1925, and fourteen months later to the position of Chief Postmas--1 ter at Palmerston North. Mr Shelton ' has served with the department for over 40 years and is retiring on superannuation.
