RETIREMENT AS PROTEST
FIVE COUNCILLORS WITHDRAW. TIMARU BOROUGH DISPUTE. (By Teiegnipii—Press Association.) TIMARU, Feb. 23. Within five minutes of the commencement of the ordinary business at the Timaru Borough Council meeting to-night a heated argument culminated in five councillors retiring from the meeting. The discussion arose over the action of the Mayor in deciding to read the opinion of the Municipal Association’s solicitor regarding the legality of the council’s action in extending the due date for the payment of rates. Several councillors protested against the letter being read as the opinion had not been asked for by the council but had been sought by the Mayor himself. The Mayor ruled that the letter should be read, whereupon one councillor moved a motion that the next business be proceeded with. The Mayor refused to accept the motion and five councillors retired as a protest. The four remaining councillors and the Mayor transacted the remainder of the business.
