Since the earthquake disaster in Ha.wke’s Bay un Tuesday, January 3. the Hawera Branch of the Red Cross Society lias been very actively engaged in effective, relief work. A sewing bee organised at the Turntimi School and the -special class- at the Hawera Alain School have supplied ol their own making a large number ol garments. Many oilier ladies have organised sewing parties lor the making and mending of clothing. Vegetables anil fruits received from all pans of tlio town arid district have been distributed through the special food committee and a complete record has been kept of the, disposal of all gifts. Up to Saturday. February 14, 12 men, 36 women and GO children have been fully equipped at the Red tiros,s Rooms in Hawera and tlio. following consignments have been despatched to other centres: —.

One case of women's and children s clothing to A.wsipuni. Two- largo bags of cloth ing per Wellington Red Cross car to Hastings. Five, cases of clothing to the Health Department depot at Napier. Three large cases, of clothing and onebox of vegetables to the Red Cross depot at Wellington. Throe bags of vegetables to Hastings, Cash donations received by the Hawera. The ready response* to the Bed Cross appeal was wonderful and this has been a. source of encouragement to the workers and comfort to the refugees.
