The monthly mooting of tho Taranaki Education Board was hold at Nen Pl> _ mouth on Wednesday, when there were present Messrs J. A. Valentine (deputychairman), P. J. H. White, A. Lees, AV. 11. Jones’and 11. Dempsey.

I teaching appointments. The chairman reported that during the month he had made the following relieving appointments: Miss B. Wu- ' liams, assistant, Eltham; Mr H. O. I Donnelly, sole teacher, Douglas; Miss [D. 0 'Callaghan, assistant, Stratford; | Miss E. Fleming, assistant, Oaonui; Miss Joan Tonks, assistant, Hawera; Miss F. 08. IHarkness, sole teacher, Whareroa; Miss I>. E. Wood, assistant, Eltham. Resignations were accepted as follows: Mr G. W. Kirk, headmaster, Inglewood (from March 31); Miss H. Hunter, assistant, Hawera. Leave of absence was granted for varving terms as follows: Miss O. ■Grindrod, 'Hawera; Mr W. McKenzie, Manaia; Mr Lee, Tawhiti; Miss M. Noble, Matapu. After consultation with the senior inspector the following appointments were given effect to: Specialist assistant, Hawera, Miss Mildred E. Griffin; assistant, Normanby, Miss Kitty C.J. Butler; assistant master, Eltham, Mr Graham N. Gordon.

MANUAL: AND TECHNICAL. On the recommendation of the manual and technical committee it. was resol\ - ed:— That the supervisor be asked to report at next meeting on the establishment of domestic science classes.

I That the department be asked apjproval of the appointment of Mrs Dick (as part-time instructress in dressmaking at the Manaia 'District High School. That the supervisor’s action in including Kaponga school be approved and that the department’s approval be asked. Tt was reported that, with an increased attendance of pupils a reduction in the cost of conveyance in accordance with the lowered departmental grants to flic extent of over £3O was made, this amount being also saved to the department. The manual supervisor (Mr D. Mackav) reported as follows: Classes commenced at the centres on February 4, the instructors being occupied for the two previous days (jn the preparation of the centres. New schools attending the classes are Kaponga, Lincoln Hoad, Matiere and Niho Niho. Material and equipment replacements to put the centres in efficient order have been ordered and forwarded to the various centres, and all centres are in working order. There are further requirements which would improve the centres, but that the present is a time for carrying on with the bare necessities rather than for asking for every convenience is well appreciated by the instructional staff. “A supply of light woodwork material is being prepared at the board’s workshop for distribution to the schools having this work already established. The smaller supply this year will be supplemented by waste material collected by the school. The present time is not opportune for the supply of tools to the other schools applying. ,

ARCHITECT'S REPORT. The board’s architect (Mr C. H, Moore) reported: — The list of projected works m order if urgency: — Schools’.—Westown, additions; Wha camara, re-instatement; Oakura, replacement; Pihama, replacement; Elham, manual building.

GENERAL MATTERS. The Director of Education notified that consideration of the request for tne remodelling of the science room at F.ltham to provide additional classroom accommodation at Eltham should be held over until the position at the new enrolment was known.

'The maintenance application form Manaia was referred to the architect with power to act. It was resolved that the Riverlca school committee be advised that the board had no special funds from which to make grants for the care of grounds during the vacation, and that the circular merely stressed the necessity of taking care of the grounds during the 'Christmas vacation; also that the board has no objection to a scheme for the interchanging of school libraries.

That the account from the Ilawcra borough for installation of a water meter at the Hawera school lie referred to the school committee for payment, their attention being drawn to the purposes for which incidental allowances may be used, and the 'Hawera Borough Council bo advised accordingly. That the matter of supplying material and free school books in necessitous cases be referred to the department for a decision on the question of what should be included.

The secretary (.Mr 11. AV. Insull) reported having visited the Whareroa dis. trict and ascertained that nineteen children resided over two miles from Hawera school and six children resided over one mile from that school. The information will lie forwarded to the department. The question of re-arranging the itinerary of the agricultural instructors was referred to v tho deputy-chairman, who will report at next meeting.

It was resolved that the attention of the department he called to the difficulty that occurred this year in that the board found it. impossible, owing to the reduced number of probationary assistants to be appointed, to place two students under division O, who were entitled to appointment.
