HAWERA W.E.A. CLASS
ANNUAL .MEETING. The annual meeting of the Hawera W.E.A. was held on Wednesday evening, Mr W. G. Simpson presiding. “The classes have been very interesting and instructive and this has-been proved by the numbers attending,” stated the report. “The attendance was so great that towards the end of the term only registered members were allowed admission, as the Borough Chamber was not big enough to accommodate all those who wished to attend. The committee felt that it was better to have a full house than to get a larger hall that would be only partly filled. This was very encouraging to the committee. A deputation waited on the Borough Council and without calling the deputation in, the council, realising the work of the classes, donated the sum of £lO.
“Mr Brailsford as tutor met. with the ‘ enthusiastic approval of every member of the class, and his capabilities were fully appreciated. It is hoped by all members that Mr Brailsford will be back again for next year’s classes. Several play readings were held without the assistance of the tutor, and members were very enthusiastic and all the readings were thoroughly enjoyed. Lectures were given by Messrs Emmit't, North and Dr MeGhic, and the thanks of the members are due ■ to these persons. After a very successful season the group ended the year with a credit, balance of £3l The membership for tho first session was Sfi and for the second session 62. The thanks of the members are due to Messrs Emmitt, North and Dr Mc'Ghie for assistance given to the movement. Tho election of officers resulted: President, Mr W. 'G. Simpson; vicepresident, Mr J. Hall; treasurer, Mr T. M. Ellis; secretary, Mr G. Chuck; committee, Messrs M. Rl Jones, J. L. Carter, E. S. Emmitt, T. Anderson, A. Larkman, Mesdames W. G. Strange, J. T\. Young, Freyberg, Eyfc, and .Miss C. Reilly.
A recommendation is to be forwarded to the general committee that a casting sub-committee be appointed. The membership fee for juniors (under 21) was fixed at 2/6 for the sea. son and 2/6 per session for adults. A 7 otes of appreciation were accorded the outgoing committee, the “Star” and Mr L. A. Ablett for past services. Appreciation was also voiced at the Borough ‘Council’s action in allowing the Borough Chambers free of charge and also for its donation of £lO made last year.
