Mr V. J. Somerset-Thomas lias been appointed a flight-lieutenant in the JNeiv Zealand Air Force, states a Wellington Press Association telegram, and is to be flying instructor at Wigram Aerodrome, bock burn. Taken suddenly ill while attending the Druids’ eucnr© tournament last evening, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Dunn, aged 64, died a few hours later in the Hawera Hospital. Deceased, a Napier resident, had been visiting her husband in hospital at Hawera and, it is understood was staying with relatives. An inquest will probably >be held.
ilie death occurred at Nelson this morning of Mr G. W. Hazleton, who retired from the position of chief postmaster at Nelson about a year ago after 40 years’ service. He was formerly stationed at various places, including Ashburton, Napier, Thames, Feilding and Wanganui. Deceased, who was much respected, leaves _ a widow and one son. —Press Association.
At the annual meeting of the South Taranaki School Committees’ Association in Ivaponga last night a motion of sympathy was passed with. Mr and Mrs 11. W.' Insull in the death of their daughter and with Mr Moore, the board’s architect, in a recent bereavement.
The death has occurred at London of Admiral Sir Alfred Winsloe, says a Press Association message. The late admiral was born in 1852 and entered the Navy in 1865, being appointed a captain after 27 years’ _ service. He saw service in the Egyptian War in 1882, and eight years later in the expedition against the Sultan of Vitu, East Africa. The following year, 1891, he went as commissioner to Massikessi, to draw a boundary between the Portuguese and the Chartered Company. He commanded H.M.S. Spartan during the Chinese-Japanese War, and rose to' Fourth Sea Lord of the Admiralty in 1906 till 1910. From 1910 till 1913 he commanded the China Station.
