WORK FOR UNEMPLOYED
C CONSIDER ABLE N U MBER ABSORBED. Eighty-three unemployed have al- . early been engaged in Hawera and district un-dor the Unemployment. Board s No. 5 scheme, including 43 on borough vvorks and 26 with the county council. | it is expected that a considerable furciier numlber will be found work under the scheme by Wednesday next. The unemployed registered with the Hawera committee now total 217, with j 73 dependents. The number of registrations' is not a true indication of the position, however, as many who have registered have not applied for work, .uid it is presumed that they have found po-si/c-ions. A number have also obtained permanent jobs. The committee wishes to point -uut- that not only do unemployed' have to register through the Post Office or the New Plymouth Labour Bureau, but also with the commit toe, and to- report to the committee until work is found for them. Under the No. 5 scheme a single mail with dependents is able to secure -only iwvo (lays’ work each week, and the 'law-era committee has found that in several cases brought under its notice indue- hardship has. been caused. The committee intends to make representations to the Unemployment Board that single men with dependents should lie placed on a similar basis as married men and not oil a level with single men without dependents.
A gang -of six men is engaged in levelling the'borough reserve in Albion Rree-t immediately at the rear of the water tower. The -section lias been in i rough state for many years and lias been used for no particular purpose. Recently it was suggested that it could very well be utilised as a. children’s playing area, but -so far no definite plans have been made.
