The English bowling again dominated the game when the fourth Test with Africa was resumed in perfect weather. Throughout the morning and for an hour after lunch the Africans had to struggle grimly for runs. .Hammond never bowled better than he did to-day. Turning back disconcertingly, he had the batsmen beaten time ancl again, but did not have the best of luck as he repeatedly beat the wicket in addition to the batsmen. Viljoen had a most uncomfortable time at Hammond’s hands, taking severe punishment on the body from rising balls. Nevertheless the young Griqnaland player batted grimly, his contribution of 30 runs in 60 minutes being invaluable, coming at a period when time was as important a factor Hammond bowled a spell of 12 overs, including three maidens, during the morning, and they cost only 16 runs. Even the redoubtable Taylor was nailed down by Hammond and was content to keep up bis end and let the runs come themselves. The last live wickets fell in an hour after lunch, Peebles striking a patch of good form. Taylor lost his wicket by treading on the wicket in an attempt to null Peebles to leg. Taylor’s 72 runs were scored in 205 minutes and be hit six boundaries. . Peebles in his last over took three wickets with five balls. The English innings in the afternoon was twice interrupted by rain. The first throe wickets fell for 23. but bones of an English collapse were soon dissipated by the excellent partnership of Hendren ancl Levland. who. treating the bowling solely on its merits, scored satisfactorily. Vincent ancl Nu pen both bowled well in notches but were inconsistent.
