A Maori named Robina Perihana, aged 26, described as a side-show artist with no fixed abode, was charged at court with being a rogue and vagabond, and imposing on the Palmerston North relief committee by false representing that he was a female. The police stated that accused had been dressed entirely in women’s clothing and gained admittance to the relief camp at the showgrounds by giving a false name. Accused, it was added, was a side-show artist and acrobat. It was believed that he had beep, convicted for masquerading in Auckland in 1929.
Accused: I have never been in trouble before. I always have been brought up as a gidj. 1 never had a chance.
The police: Trat is the same plea as that given in Auckland. The magistrate characterised accused’s act as despicable, and sentenced him to three months’ imprisonment.
