“LEARN TO SWIM WEEK”

iSOHOOL PUPILS. INSTRUCTED. The “learn to swim week” commenced in Taranaki schools yesterday and instruction wa.s afforded large mini-. hers of eager pupils in the various centres. The Tlawera baths presented a busy scene throughout the afternoon hours from noon till 4 o’clock. Instructors from the Tlawera Amateur Swimming Club were in attendance throughout the period to co-operate with school teachers and valuable aid was afforded by the belt device erected this season by the baths custodian ('Mr J. Dowdle), who was also in attendance. Boys’ classes were the order of the afternoon. The Tlawera High School and the Convent School commenced with flic 12 to one o’clock session, the Tawhiti School followed from one till two o’clock, the Turuturu School occupied the hour from two to three o’clock and the Ilaworn (Main School pupils were allotted the hour from three to four o’clock. Messrs B. Basset (12 to 1), A. Spragg (1 to 2), S. Anderson (2 to 3), and I. Jobson (3 to 4) were the instructors, Mr Spragg; also attending throughout the full afternoon. Many pupils made excellent progress and a. number wore advanced to the stage of attempting solo effort. At a meeting of the Tlawera Swimming Club Committee, held last evening the following instructors for the remainder of the “learn to swim week” were appointed as follow: — Tuesdays and Thursdays (girls’ hours): 12 to one, Aliss Betty Ryan; 1 to 2, Miss (P. Murray; 2 to 3, Miss Z. Spragg; 3 to 4, Misses K. Duckworth and B. Powdroll; 12 to 4, Mesdanies E. Higgs, T. Moss and Ferguson. Friday (men’s hours): 12 to 1, (Mr B. Bassett- 1 to 2, Messrs B. Ryan and M. R. Nelson; 2 to 3, Mr V. Spragg; 3 to 4, Mr I. Jobson; 12 to 4, Mr A. Spragg; 12 to 4 daily, Messrs A. AV. Lawn and D. C. Ryan.

Adults who wish to learn are requested to report at the baths between 7 a.m. and S' ami. (men) and 10 a.m. and LI a.in. (women) on any morning.

BA NNER COMPETITION.

HAWERA TEAMS’ CONTEST.

Races for various trophies of the Hawera Amateur Swimming Club were conducted at the Municipal Baths last evening and the banner competition was continued.

Honours of the evening were very evenly distributed, only two points separating the team totals. The captain's team registered 28 points and the vice-captain \s team 2(3. The aggregate totals arc vice-captain’s team. 203; captain’s team, 200. instruction in diving and taking off was given to a number of club members in view of the approach of the championships, the coaching being supervised by Mrs E. CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS

At a committee meeting which followed the sports it was reported by Mr Spragg that the New Plymouth authorities- controlling the centre championships to he held on Wednesday had decided to complete the whole programme at an evening session. There would I bus be no necessity for competitors to attend during the afternoon. It was intimated that 37 competitorsi and a number of officials would be proeeeding from lllawera and arrangements were made for conveyance by cars to leave the Pose Office at 5.30 •p.m. Mr D. 0. Ryan was appointed manager of the team. Thanks were extended to Messrs V. Spragg (presentation of cup), 4. T>. Hamilton (writing a sign) and A. Gamlin (use of property for club I picnic. Application is to bo made to the centre for a carnival on March 9. Swimmers attending the Now Zealand championships at Wanganui a few days earlier are to he asked to attend.
