EARTHQUAKE RELIEF STALL

(From Our Own Correspondent.) On Friday a street stall was held in order to assist in the campaign for funds for the earthquake sufferers. The stall was in the charge of Airs L. M. Blackwell, who was ably assisted I by Atesdatiies A. W. Anderson, Lovcr‘jdge, and Miss .loan Gallagher. A I bountiful supply of home-made cakes, scones, jams, etc., as well as large supplies of vegetables, together with a dozen dressed fowls, were brought along by sympathisers, and a busy time' was spent by those in charge of the stall. A competition for a- goose, donated bv Mrs Clias. West, was won by Air Joe Peters, the winning number being 59. whilst, a box of chocolates, donated by Airs C. Tonkin, was annexed by Mr AV. Gran, number 12. The dressed fowls sold rapidly and manv more could have been disposed of, but, vegetables wore in great supple and a quantity is being taken to the depot at Hawera by Air L. Plant, from whence they will, be forwarded to the relief camps. Mrs A. Powell donated a woollen jacket and this competition will be ■decided at the e lie'll re par tv on the 20th. Tbe excellent sum of £9 0s Sd was taken, a very creditable effort, and lias been handed to the Town Clerk for inclusion in the board’s list. The stall committee desires to extend grateful thanks to all those who so generously came forward with goods for the stall. | The committee responsible for the jstreet stall has also arranged a grand euchre party to take place in the ' town Hall on Friday next, also in• aid

of the earthquake relief fund. Good prizes are being'provided and there'is to be a dance afterwards. GENERAL. A somewhat unusual experience befell tbe local electrical engineer (Atr A. W. Anderson) when engaged in locating a fault on the Upper Alauaia Road, near Air. C. Rowe’s property, last week. Looking un on to the 400volt transmission lines, Air Anderson n tit iced- a black object which appeared to In- suspended in mid-air. Ou closer examination the object proved to be an opossum, which had its tail hooked around one side of the line and its feet hanging on to the other. The animal had failed to stand up to the electrical treatment at 400 volts pressiire and was quite dead. Air J. Brownlee, who lias been spending a holiday with Air and Airs Alarr. returned to AVcllington on Friday. Mr AV. Farncll is at present indisposed and has been confined to his home for the past Jew days.
