RESIGNATION OF CABINET
SPAIN’S FUTURE IN BALANCE KING ALFONSO MAY ABDICATE POSSIBILITY OF DICTATORSHIP. . UuiMwJ PrewJ Aseoctatluii —By illootno r«iwg.rnpi Copyright.) MADRID, Feb. 14. Cabinet has resigned. King Alfonso is consulting political leaders with a view to tlie formation of a new Minis-' trv, probably of a national chaiactei. Intense excitement prevails, it is l'elt that the next few hours will decide Spain’s future. The opposition to lving Alfonso is daily strengthening and it is helped by the seizure of new spapei-s, the closing or the principal aduitorium and the imprisonment of those whose comments indict the Government, ihe Press of tlie extreme Right considers that party divisions will render civilian government impossible and demands a continuance of the dictatorship. The possibility of King Alfonso’s abdicating is officially denied. Queen Ena, who sixmt a recent sojourn in England beside* the sick-bed of her mother, Princess Beatrice, is hastening to Madrid in order to be bv her husband’s side. It was .stated last night that the ; Prime Minister, General Berenguer, intended to resign immediately following an interview with the war-time Prime 1 Minister, Count Romanones. This jyas associated with a rumour that the King had acceded to the popular demand for convocation of a constituent assembly, i Such an assembly would review the whole constitutional situation and might even ask King Alfonso to abdicate.
According to another rumour a group of generals met at Saragosa ostensibly to see a German film but actually to engineer another dictatorship. Whether this is true or otherwise, the fact remains that the Ministry of War last night was the centre of unusual activity. 1
