PUTTING THE SHOT
RECORD BY RQTRERT
AMERICANS AT NEW PLYMOUTH.
Teiegrapu—Creiia Association.; NEW PLYMOUTH, Feb. 15. Brilliant victories in the mile and ICO yards, and superiority in field events, were achieved by the American athletes, G. Simpson, R. Kiser, and A. Rothert, at New Plymouth last night. With the magnificent distance of 50ft 4-jin., Rothert put the shot further by | inches than lie had , done previously !in New Zealand. This is 4ft. 2jin. better than the present New Zealand record, which Rothert has already .passed ,on several occasions. Only inches separated Simpson and I S. A. Black (New Plymouth) at the conclusion of a thrilling final for the 100 yards. Bounding like a shot from the scratch mark the American rapidly passed the men in front, but Black was tenacious. He, too, went through the field. Excitement was intense when it seemed he might defeat Simpson, but in a gruelling, finish he could not imj 'prove his position sufficiently, and .the i American touched the tape a fraction ,of a second ahead of him. Simpson’s I time was lOsec. The final of the 220 yards provided a ' magnificent race. Black and Simpson loft the five-yard mark andl scratch I mark respectively like shots Horn a I gun . Simpson was behind the field at I the top of the, straight. Black spurted desperately, and drew ahead, of the ) others, but Simpson was coming fast, ) and lessened the lead to two, yards. ) Black hung on to win by that distance, Simpson gaining nothing over the last .20 yards. The, good time of 22sec wars made. R. Rose (New Plymouth) did not start in the half-mile as it was his intention to reserve hi® strength to contend the mile with Kiser. The sight of Tviser winning the mil© rim oO yards | ahead of Rose, in the good time of 4min 22 2-ssec., will long be rememI bered. I Conceding long handicaps, S'. Lay, l British Empire champion, threw the javelin 201 ft. from scratch, but this j was not far enough to overcome the i handicap of 27 feet added to the throw of 170 feet 4 inches by Rothert. who j thus gained first place. | A vinegar of quality—Shari a ml’s
