PROFIT FROM PIGS

POSSIBILITIES OF INDUSTRY

A golden opportunity for the Doiminion to establish a primary industry* which might easily be worth, in export value, anything up to £5,000,000 per annum, was referred to by Mr Eliot Davis in a wireless talk on ‘‘Pig Production,” which lie- gave from IYA last week.

Mr. Davis gave an idea of the immense and untold posibilitics to be derived from the exportation of pork to England. He stressed the need for more pig-breeders to help the industry. The Imperial Economic Committee in England last year stated that New Zealand had greater possibilities than any other country for the development of pig interests. The great demand in Britain was for mild cured bacon and the quantity of bacon and ham consumed was about 20 times as much as the amount of fresh and frozen pork. The bulk of our pig export must be in frozen porkers for which there was an unlimited demand. Denmark, where pig-producing had been brought to the same pitch o! perfection as the Jersey cow in New Zealand for butter making, supplied the bulk of pig products for the British market. Denmark in 192 S exported in England £25,796.525 worth of pig products; New Zealand’s exports (in the same class) to England totalled £406,407). The enormous . advantage which might accrue to the Dominion by application to pig production was stressed by Mr. Davis, but he said the quality of our pork must be improved i it- was to compete successfully with Denmark. As a sidelight oil what might lie done in this direction he pointed out that Denmark's pig products sent to England exceeded hei dairying exports by £7,000,(100 per annum. Addressing his remarks to dairy farmers the lecturer said that from Lis own experience if they got busy in the pig industry by the time spring came round their burdens would have been materially lightened and the Dominion assisted in the task of getting out of the present trough of depression.
