The monthly meeting of the Manaiu School Committee was held on AVodncsdnv. there being present rhe Bev. K. Miller (chairman), W. Vincent, C. Sole, G. It. Butler, X. W. Sc own. J. T. Clague and G. 11. Edwards. The headmaster, Mr J. Browning, reported that the secondary roll was 53 and the primary 245. This was an increase of T9.in the secondary and a decrease of seven in the primary. The grounds were generally in good order but the buildings were in need of slight attention. The caretaker was carrying out his duties satisfactorily. A holiday would be given next Wednesday on the occasion of the Waimate horticultural show. The chairman said it had been questioned whether they should have held the school picnic last week in view of the earthquake disaster, but he stud the proposal for postponement, came at very short notice and it was difficult to make an alteration. Other members thought that very little good would have been done by postponement. The headmaster said lie would consult the teachers on the subject of giving the children’s contributions to tne fund. The question of a good attendance shield for competition was discussed and it was resolved to obtain a shield, the chairman offering to donate one. A working bee to carry out improvements to the grounds will be hold on. Saturday. I t was decided to thunk-Mr Barry for mowing the grass on the playground. It was mentioned that the secondary roll number was a record. Messrs Edwards and Vincent were appointed a visiting committee for next month. v
