BAND CONTEST
MEETING OF LOCAL COMMITTEE S I’C/G ESTED FOR. EARTHQUAKE BELIEF. A meeting of (lie liawera Baud Contest committee was held yesterday afternoon, Mr. E. Dixon presiding. The secretary, Mr. \V. Hawkins, reported that a telegram had been received from Wellington stating that a special meeting of the combined committee itiad decided, subject ot tine judge being available,".to hold the contest from March 7 to 13, conditionally that it be for the benefit of the relief fund and that bands forego prize moneys for that purpose, otherwise it would he definitely postponed. It was decided to reply: ‘‘Bequest unreasonable and absurd. Bauds under great expense attending contest. Most contests show profit, lie courageous.”
It is worth notice, as recalled by the chairman, that on February 5 Hawera in a communication with the 'Tramways Band in Wellington, suggested that the profits or part of them from the contest go to the earthquake relief fund.
