At the meeting of the Opunake Power Board yesterday a vote of sincere sympathy was passed with the sufferers in the recent earthquake, members standing out of respect to the memory of those who were killed.
The question of helping the unemployed by means of scheme No. 5 was briefly discussed at the Opunake Power Board meeting yesterday and it was decided to see if the board was empowered to do anything under the scheme. The proceeds of the sale of a pig given by J. McKay, of Mokoia, and sold at Newton King, Ltd., sale on Friday, February G, for the earthquake relief fund totalled £9 Bs. The following were contributors: J. McKay £1 10s J. Thonilinson £1 10s, J. Sinclair £1 7s, J. Mead £1 Is, D. AVills £l, 10 Cann £l. F. Ogle £l, J. Paterson £i.
Mr A. Iv. Bell, of Arthur Bell and Sons, Perth, Scotland, who recently visited New Zealand, cabled his New Zealand representatives, Messrs Reid and Reid, conveying deepest regret at the earthquake and requesting them to donate £IOO to the relief fund on behalf of his firm.—Press Assn.
At the meeting of the Eltham. County Council to-day the question was asked as to whether they could accept, say, half the rates before 25tli inst. It was stated that in view of the difficult times this was being, done, the clerk adding that the penalty would he payable only on the balance unpaid at that date. A councillor remarked that at a time like this they must be as lenient as possible.
A visitor to Hawera to-day was Professor Percival, of Canterbury College, who is Professor of Biology there. He has made a hobby of the study of trout and acclimatisation matters and is now in the course of a tour of the Dominion, inspecting the streams in the various districts. He has inspected the-- local hatcheries and went round the various streams of the district with Messrs B. C. Bennett and AV. A. Spragg, president and vicepresident of the Hawera society, and members from Stratford and Eltham. He goes on to Stratford to deliver a lecture there this evening on the subject of acclimatisation. He has been all over New Zealand, except the East Coast of the North Island and the West Coast of the South Island.
