GREY CUP RELAY. HAWERA TEAM’S VICTORY. The Taranaki Mile swimming championship was won. by H. St. George (Fitzroy Club) at a carnival held by the Nejw Plymouth Amateur Swimming Club at the New Plymouth Municipal baths on Saturday evening. The Grey Cup relay race was also contested and resulted! in the: Hawera team winning very decisively in the remarkably .fast time of 71 2-5 seconds, an average of 17 4-sseconds per man for each length. The Taranaki mile championship, won by H. St. George with B. Dudley second and It. Gardiner third, drew nine entries. Three, however, I. Johson,.who was to swim for Hawera in I the Grey Cup relay just afterwards, CL I H. PI uni tree, who had an injured) laiee, and N. Gardiner were scratched. The starters were K. Staunton (F), IT. St. George (F), W. Itimmington (E.E.). It. Gardiner (E'.E,.), A. Ryan (H) and R. Dudley (0). Ryan was responsible for most of the pace-making and when lie retired after 32 lengths had established a lead for St. George and! himself of a lap with Dudley swimming unpaced, in next place and It. Gardiner auother length away. Staunton was fourth and Rimmington had retired earlier. St. George was in a good position for by swimming with Gardiner he could hold ais two lap® lead, while Dudley lost a ru-obable advantage by going alone. Staunton retired after 39 laps with cramp, signs: of which had prevented <im keeping with the leaders. Dudley dropped back some yards over the last rniartcr but St. George kept with Gardiner to finish strongly aud little distressed by one a quarter .lengths. Gardiner. the only other to finish., was nearly a lap further hack. Eight entries were received for the Grey Cup championship relay race for 4-men teams, each member to swim 33 1-3 yards-, but the scratching: of Opunako" and East End B left a good field of .six teams. The word “go” saw nil six of the first men enter in line hut Bassett (H), was slightly, ahead halfway and had a yard or two in hand from Toomey (Fitzroy) and R. Gayton iX. I*. A.) when A. Spragg took over, the lead was still more pronounced at the end of the .second lap, but Jobson trained nothing from Trueman and Anderson was left with an easy task.
