HAWERA COUNCIL. THE MONTH’S WORK. Members of the Hawera County Council present at the meeti]irr on Saturday were: Crs J. »• Murdoch (chairman), W. Robliery, G. A Williams. A. G. Larcom, A. E. Death, E. A. Washer and H. I. Crocker. An apology was received from Cr Winks. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The engineer, Mr A. Muggeridge, reported, that all the metal was delivered for the widening of Normanby Road and the grouting would be attended to when the weather was- suitable. Three days next week would finish the bitumen grouting, and as ! soon as that wag, done the backing up of the metal would be gone on with, j Ivetemarae Road, metalled last [autumn, has been rolled and sealed with tar. As soon as that was set the road would ho swept and refaced with bitumen. A concrete- wall would have to bo erected in front of the bridge at the new metal site as the tides during the past few days had been breaking over the bridge and the water had been coming uu the tram with the abnormal! tides. There was a good deal of time] taken up with clearing shingle that! blocked the foot of the line. The scrub near the Tongalioe bridge on Main South Road had been cut and there was now a good view of the bridge. The Highways Board engineer had "put pegs in at the "VVaingongoro bridge and these would have to stand for six months. Then observations would he taken periodically to see if there was any movement in the bridge. Sbiugle had been delivered to Ivefceniarao and Normanby-Okaiawa Roads in readiness for sealing purposes. Most of the sbiugle: was still procured from the Waingongoro beach as there was very little at the metal site. The portion of Ivetemarae Road from Austin Road to the Ketemarae pa, a distance r>f 4-p chains, reauired metalling throughout. It would take 81G yards s of metal. A request- was received from Messrs Larcom Bros, that the Mangapoa Road j giving access to their property between Ohangai and Austin Road, be put in <• order, seeing that it was impassable for r vehicles. It was resolved that- the engineer endeavour to arrange the q work under No. 7> Unemployment Re- ( lief Scheme. The Waitaki Council suggested a conference of local bodies to discuss derating and speed limits. This was held •over until next meeting. Tire- chairman reported attending a conference of Unemployment Committee.-. at- Hawera on February 6, wheu the scheme No. 6 was considered. He recommended that certain widening works be carried out, under the scheme. His action and recommendation were confirmed. The Public Works engineer, Stratford. advised that no further funds would be available for completion of tin- Whcnnakura! valley bridge.

The office opened on January 12 and from that date to January 31 £3240 was collected in rates, while other receipts were licences £IOB, Highways subsidy £532/ a total of £3885. The overdraft was £12,158. To January 31 £10,483 in rates were collected, equal to 4G.08 pa rcent .of the total, and outstanding were £12,264.
