UNEMPLOYED RELIEF
SCHEME; NO. 5. OPERATING AT HAWERA. A further grant of £SO has been received from the New Zealand Unemployment Board by the relief committee at Hawera, this making a total of £450 since the inauguration of the relief scheme.
The board’s Scheme No. 5, under which local bodies are co-operating to afford relief and give weekly employment of from two to four days according to classification in the light of a man’s dependents, came into operation at Hawera to-day and a total of 21 on tlie unemployed register at Hawera were placed in work under it. These are all four-day men and are being employed by the Hawera Borough Council. A further eight are to bo placed with the Hawera County Council tomorrow. It is hoped to increase that number to 25 in tlie near future. These will be two and three-day men and the quota of 25 will provide for 50 men weekly.
Efforts arc being made to formulate other schemes in Hawera, Norinanby and Manaia and to ensure that all the workers will get at least two days’ work weekly. The number registered at present is 187. Mr. P. J. Small, the farmers’ representative on the Unemployment Board, called at the Hawera office this morning and conversed with the assembly there.
