As advertised in yesterday’s issue the Hawera Pipe Baud will play in the main streets to-night and collections will be taken up on behalf of the earthquake relief funds. The telephone exchange hours for Sundays at Patea have been extended and for the future will be 9 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. These will be tried for three months and) the position then again reviewed.

The Hawera Chamber of Commerce was to have met last evening, but it was decided to hold a special meeting on Tuesday at 4 p.m. to discuss a number of important matters.

A report submitted to the Hawera Unemployment Committee last evening stated there were 171 unemployed registered locally. Wiork had been found for 124 of them for 1169 working days the cost of subsidising their wages being £406. The South Taranaki Automobile Association’s patrol officer Mr. J. MoKee,, has been- on duty on the DaiuievirkeNa'pier Road since the earthquake. Patrol officers from Auckland, Wellington. Manawatu and Wanganui are also on duty and they are rendering invaluable service to many motorists experiencing ear trouble on these congested thoroughfares. , The usual fortnightly parade of tne Ohawe Troop, Legion of Frontiersmen, was held at Hawera on Thursday evening, under Lieut. A. E. Stevens. The services of the troop were offered to the Mayor to assist, in any capacity, tno committee formed for the earthquake relief. One new member was initiated. After the routine business, Trooper J. C. Findlater gave a very interesting lecture on “The Bonds of Empire.’’

The following cablegram has been received by Messrs Bennett and Sutton from the firm of Harrison' and McGregor Ltd., of Leigh, Lancashire, with whom the local firm do considerable business: “Greatly shocked by news of terrible uisaster at Napier and Hastings. Please accept our sincerest sympathy.” The cablegram indicates that the terrible nature of the disaster is fully realised in England and shows an interest by Home firms in the affairs affecting the well-being of the people of New Zealand.

The Waitaki County Council yesterday morning decided that rationing as proposed by the Unemployment Board’s number 5 scheme was impracticable for county work. It was decided to write to the board protesting against the rate x>f pay proposed. While sympathetic, the council considered it impossible to work the scheme. If the Unemployment Board was prepared to accept recommendations the council was prepared to co-operate. The citizens of Manaia and surrounding district intend making a combined eltort on behalf of the earthquake suf-: ferers. With this iu view a combined rmeeting of ladies of the Town Board district and the Waimate West county districts has been called for 3 p.m. at the Town Hall on Monday. It is specially requested that every lady of the district will be present at the meeting, when committees will be formed and the organisation of the district be proceeded with. At 8 p.m., in the county office, Manaia, the men, of the two districts will meet for the same purpose and immediately the various committees have been elected and organisation completed the canvassing of the district and centralisation of relief will be proceeded with with all despatch.

At short notice it has been decided to hold a. grand massed, bands’ concert in the Opera House to-morrow ovouing at B.lb in aid of the relief fund for sufferers by the earthquake. The Wanganui Garrison and Hawera Municipal Bands will collaborate in a lino sacred programme, which is certain to be a great success. The proprietors of the Opera House have given free use of the hall and the lighting tv iff also he free. Red Cross workers tAll take up a collection in aid of the find.
