An important conference is proceeding at Canberra on finance, unemployment and help for farmers between the Prime Minister, Air J. 11. Scullin, the Federal Treasurer, Air E. G. Theodore, and the chairman of the Commonwealth Bank, Sir Robert Gibson. A series of financial proposals evolved by Air Theodore will bo placed before Sir Robert Gibson, who will be asked how far tne Commonwealth Bank will be able to assist the Government’s revised plans for coping with unemployment, and affording relief to wheat growers. The outcome of the conference is awaited in all parts of the Commonwealth.
So, desperate is the plight of hundreds of farmers in the wheat and irrigation areas of the western and southern portions of New South Wales that (hey have pledged themselves to resist •my attempt to foreclosure and to refrain from bidding for one another’s properties. The Producers’ Advisory Council has issued a statement advocating a rural emergency loan to assist the Australian far.mer. The council suggests a loan of £3,000.000 or £4,000,000, raised in instalments, to allow urgent cases to. be dealt with immediately, with a sales tax. on flour. This amount would meet the fanners’ needs.
