HERO OF THREE WARS
OFFICER WITHOUT PENSION. WORKING AsTpASTR YCOOK. The drama of an elderly ex-officer of the British army, who fought in the South African War in Betlrune’s Horse did special service with the Aiounted Rifles in the Zulu campaign, was severely wounded while fighting in the Great War, and after his retirement from the army without pension was obliged to work as a pastrycook, was enacted before Judge Aloore recently at the Southwark County Court. This gallant soldier was Captain Robert Johnson, and he had been employed as a pastrycook by Mr.. A. Wakling, a baker, but had been dismissed, Captain Johnston alleged, without proper notice. Captain Johnson sued for £4 10s, a week’s wages in lieu of notice, 15s for , y' ten hours’ overtime, and 10's which he T alleged was wrongfully deducted from ' his 'wages. The defence was that Captain Johnson received a trial, but proving unsatisfactory after the second week, was discharged. Judge Moore said the question was whether the (agreement was in the nature of a week’s trial. Captain Johnson, when asked by the judge if he wished to address him, stood at attention and. said that he had undeniable references from firms he had served. “I carried out my duties with Air. Whiffing in a conscientious manner,” he said. “I have forty stitches in my stomach and my skull has been split open as a result of war service for this country. I ask no sympathy. I can bear my own burdens. . “I have an unquestioned record throughout the world at a military man, and I hold a rank of distinction. My work with Air. Wakling was hard, but I did not complain. I did my best.” Judge Aloore gave judgment for Air. Wakling. The judge, addressing Captain Johnson, added: “You have played the part of a gallant soldier in the service of your country, and I sincerely hope you will obtain another engagement.” . Captain Johnson saluted the judge before leaving the box.
