NEW ZEALAND’S UNEMPLOYED

OVER. TWELVE THOUSAND. NEW RECORD SET. A new record in unemployment registrations was created for the week ended! January 12, during which period the total number of men out of work whose names appeared on the registers at labour bureaux throughout New Zealand was 12,230. This was an increase of 3527 over the previous week. The Dominion total fell considerably over the holiday period as .a result of the efforts of the Unemployment Board and local committees, the number wgi. stored on December 29 being 7596 as: compared with 14.371 for the previous seven days, which, approximated closely to the previous record of 11,442, a total reached during the week ended December 15. Last week’s increase is almost identical with the decrease of 3775 recorded for the week ended December 29. Official figures supplied in Wellington last evening by the Minister of Labour, Hon, S. G. Smith, gave the tall lowing returns for the main centres for the week ending January 12;
