SWIMMING CARNIVAL

— CONTESTS AT JIAWERA. EXC ELLEN T PERFORM ANC ES All concerned in the organisation and conduct of the first swimming carnival of the season at liawern last night, run under the aegis of the Hawera. Swimming Club, are to be cordially congratulated on the success that attended" their efforts. The entries were excellent, the various clubs from 'Wanganui to Now (Plymouth giving keen support and the fields, therefore, being very good and including the best on the whole coast. Interest, too, was heightened by the appearance ami ’he participation in a special event of the New (Zealand breaststroke champion, L. Smith. His work was much admired. The people of the town and district responded well and there was not a vacant scat anywhere. The arrangements made by the cotni.~. 4 tee in collaboration with the president (Afr A. W. Lawn) and honorary secretary (Mr M. R. Nelson), were all that could he desired and every event ’was got off with expedition. The handicapping was a tribute to the work of (Mr D. Cl. Ryan and there were many close and exciting finishes. He also acted efficiently as starter.
