Propowa'is before the New South Wales Parliament for declaring a moratorium were extended to hire-purchase agreements which have been made to cover all sorts of articles other than the time-honoured sewing machine and pianoforte purchases by extended payments. Alotor-cars, wireless sets, women’s fur coats, gramophones, -'jewellery, washing machines, and all sorts of articles, necessaries, .and! inessentials have been sold on the hire-pur-chase system. The above proposals are made retrospective to 26th November. so as to protect prsons against whom proceedings were commenced after the Government’s intention to introduce the moratorium was announced. The provisions of the Act lextend to hire-purchase agreements. A, hire-purchase agreement is regarded as a mortgage on goods. In the case of a hire-purchase agreement, the Court may readjust the amount of instalments "to be- paid and postpone the. payment of instalments, having due regard to the rights and interest of both parties, to the conduct of the hirer, and to al'i circumstances of the case. The Court is given wide discretion to vary instalments and suspend payments. A mortgagee may be allowed to foreclose if the Court is satisfied that- the continuance of the mortgage would seriously a fleet the security or that the conduct of the mortgagor has rendered him undeserving of protection. According to the Swiss hotel proprietors’ latest report, £4,000,000- has been spent- during t-hel last 10 years to -provide hotels with hot and cold running water. Swiss hotels possess a total of 18,000 beds, with 100,000_bedrooms thus provided. The remainder will be similarly fitted within the next few years at- a furtlietr cost of £2,000,000. ‘
