ROBBING A HOSTESS
MEAN THEFT OF DIAMOND KING
What the magistrates described as the meanest theft that had ever come before them was revealed at Hendon, when Raymond Henry. Lancelot Keeble, aged 32, pleaded guilty to stealing a diamond ring, valued at £l4O, from Mrs Cathleen Durward, with whom he was staying as a guest at the time. Keeble declared that lie found the ring and was not aware that it was tue property of his hostess. A police officer stated that Keeble had held the rank of captain during and after the war. and resigned his position in a Barnstaple bank last year in conse<|iience of divorce proceedings against him. Keeble was arrested at Charing (truss Post Office, where he had received r, letter address to H. Matthews, an assumed name, under which he had written to Mrs Durward offering to return the ring on payment of £OO.
Keeble was sentenced to four months imprisonment.
