THE GARDEN AND ITS GLORY

KING EDWARD PABK ATTRACTION

BEAUTY SPOT OF HAWERA

Under efficient control the lovely gardens and lawns at King Edward. Park, Hawera, have been planted and developed until they have become a beauty spot which attracts all who come to the town. Visitors appear to be almost more enthusiastic over them than are those who can see them at any time. There is no doubt that the gardens are an eloquent tribute to the men who in succession have taken a part in their formation and development. Each section has a beauty of its own and together they would appear to fulfil the words of Bacon in being ‘‘for all the months in the year.” The manner in which, with each change of the season, the blooms or shrubs, suited to that season come into their wealth of beauty betokens the skilled hand and the observant mind behind the scheme.

Probably the delightful little fernery, the lawns, hedges and grass paths, the’ rose beds, the rhododendron, hydrangea and Azalea walks, and the palm grove have all been seen again and again. But an entirely new part will shortly be a. blaze of glorious colours and one of the greatest attractions in the park garden. An excavation has been made, very similar in shape to the fernery, and in it have been .planted about 300 hothouse specimens of varied colours, with a background of the highly scented 1 ilium auratum, and borders in front of the lovely blue viola, with sweet peas growing round three rough stems oj old trees The combined effect should be wonderful. It will add another to the many and varied attractions of the gardens. . . The people of Hawera are indeed fortunate, perhaps more so than they realise, in having their love of art and beauty in nature so richly endowed.
