FOOT-AND-MOUTH DISEASE
SUCCESS OF NEW SERUM
In view of the recent discussions on the prevention of importation of cattle from Britain owing to the danger from foot and mouth disease, it will be of interest to learn that a new inoculation process has been tried out with very great success. The “Daily Express’ ’ reporting on this work says that “No single instance has occurred in which cattle known to have been in contact with infected beasts have developed the disease after inoculation. The serum used in the inoculation experiments is said to be prepared from a German formula.” It was first introduced to Britain when outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease occurred at Bilsdale, in North Yorks, where the experiments leave taken place. “The experiments have been entirely successful,” said an official of the Ministry of Agriculture, who lias taken an active part in the war on the disease, to me to-day.
“The evidence of tlie experiments must he held to he conclusive,” lie continued, “and it may safely he estimated that thousands of cattle will be saved from slaughter by the application of this inoculation process. ‘The experiments will be extended to other parts of the country where outbreaks occur.”
