AN IDYLL OF BIG BUSINESS

j T3OMANCE recently caused the un--1 1 ' willing dismissal of a typist by a (large Manchester firm, and the circumstances raise the interesting question of how far tne interests of young lovers on the staff can be reconciled with those of business. An engaged couple were employed ,in the office, and the man found another situation in London with a firm that might become a competitor of his former employers. The girl remained. Her employers were in a quandary. Business matters that the firm might | want to keep secret passed through her hands, and obviously the meetings of the engaged couple presented a means by which they could bo unwitting parties to trade information getting beyond the girl’s firm. Engaged couples naturally confide in each other, it was pointed out, and matters which mignt not appear important, but which actually were, might be discussed outside the office.

Lovers Put Employers in Quandary

I Reluctantly, her employees decided that they would have to discharge hen. I “We were very sorry to do this,” „ it was explained to the “Sunday Dispatcli. ’ ‘ “She was a very valued worker —both of them were. We have no objection to a man bettering hi* position, and he left with our good wishes. “There is, of course, no suggestion i that we had reason to fear leakage of information from this or any other source, but the position would have been difficult.” The depth of the dilemma in wliien the employers were placed is emphasised by the fact that the firm is noted for its consideration for its employee and its interest in their welfare. So much for the view of Big Bnness. Now for the happy ending. When it was all over, the girl w; offered —and accepted—a post with hoi fiance's new employers!
