Major and Mrs. H. Wyatt, officers in charge of the Hawera Salivation Army corps, have received notice' of their transfer to Blenheim. Ensign and Mrs. D. Prince, formerly of Palmerston North, and now of Teanuka, have been appointed to the Hawera charge. Major and Mrs. Wyatt leave Hawera on January 21. After a lengtidy illness, the death occurred at 1 a.m. to-day of Mr. Matthew (Puano) Luke, of Hastings Road. The late Mr. Luke, who was 47 years of age, had resided) in the district the whole of his life and was widely respected by Pakeha and Maori alike. He is survived by liis widow and one daughter, Mrs. C. J. Haddon, Oihawe. The Governor-General and Lady Bledisloe paid a visit of inspection yesterday to the Roslyn woollen mills, states a Dunedin message. Her Excellency later visited the Karitane hospital for babies. In the afternoon they visited the museum, Lady Bledisloe afterwards attending a reception at the Otago Women’s Club. To-day they will inspect the City Council’s hydroelectric works at Waipori.
A veteran of the Maori wars and an old resident of the Tuakau district, Mr James Henderson, died at his residence, Tuakau, on Tuesdaj'. Mr Henderson was born at sea in 1843, on a ship travelling from Scotland to Victoria. He spent his first years in Australia, coming to New Zealand with his parents and other members of the family in 1857. Shortly after their landing the Maori War broke out, Mr Henderson seeing military service at the age of 18 years. For about 50 years his business and farming interests were in the Clevedon district and later in Tuakau.
A leading officer in the New Zealand railways, Mr. J. K. Lowe, district engineer in Auckland, and well known in Hawera and district, will retire this month after forty yeans of service. Mr. Lowe has been connected with the organisation and completion of many very large works in the Auckland and other districts. r Entering the service in Wellington in 1890 lie was successively assistant district engineer at Auckland, district engineer at Ohakune, West Coast, Invercargill and Wanganui before going to Ilfs present position in 1924. He was due to retire in October last, but in view of the important works under life supervision in and round l Auckland, lie agreed _to postpone his retirement until this Month.
