MOTOR CAR THAT FLOATS

The occupants of motor cars waiting to cross the ferry at Old Kilpatrick, near Glasgow, were astonished recently to see a queer-looking vehicle push past them, enter the water and proceed to cross the Clyde and climb out on the opposite bank under its own power. The length of the body or hull is 10ft and the beam 3ft Bin, the total weight of the outfit being about 15cwt. The engine fitted gave a maximum land speed of thirty-five miles an hour and a water speed of five miles an hour. When the vehicle is driven on land the propeller is out of action and the change over is performed in the usual way by two dog clutches. Frontwheel drive combined with steering is employed, and the same wheels guide when in the water, so that there is no necessity for additional stern rudders. The hydrocar is stated to be in no respect experimental.
