The importance of extreme precision in the adjustment of plate clutches cannot be over-emphasised from .the standpoint of smoothness of engagement. The adjustment in question is that affecting the toggle or operating levers (usually three) which convey the pedal motion to the clutch plates. If one of these comes into or goes out of action before the others shuddering in the take up is almost certain to occur. When the pedal is lightly pressed by hand to take up- the essential lost motion, the withdrawal ring should bear equally upon all the lever ends; there should be no shake whatever in any of them.
