WITHHOLDING OF SUBSIDIES. 'PROTEST FROM 'HASTINGS. IBy Telegraph—Press Association.) HASTINGS, Dec. 20. Criticism of the ■Government’s action in refusing to pay subsidies until after April 1 next was’ voiced, at a combined meeting of representatives, of school committees of Hastings' .and' surrounding districts held last night. The'following resolution was carried: “Thiat this meeting of combined: school committees protests against the Education Department's action in. withholding subsidies on approved 1 works. While we are quite prepared to allow the subsidies to stand over until the financial position, of the country improves. we consider that when the department -Iras given approval for work to proceed ami commit te'Cs have THi-ler-talien or completed that work, payment should 1 be made. 'To nohvi state that payments .cannot bo made until at least- April 1 is a distinct breach of faith and) wo consider we. have not only a moral but also a legal claim against tho department. Will the department advise school committees how they are to meet liabilities after completing authorised works?”
