WOOL SALE AT DUNEDIN

LATE RATES MAINTAINED. QUALITY NOT UP TO USUAL. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Deo. 18. The first Dunedin wool sail© of the 1930-31 season was held this afternoon, when catalogues of 10,454 bales submitted to a representative bench ot buyers with more than the usual quota of local interests. The market was firm at recent South Island rates. The catalogue was the smallest submitted for the first sale for a number ot rears. The corresponding offering at this sale last year was 20,132 bales. The shortage of to-day’s offering was due to a .large extent to the inclement weather, which has delayed shearing, and to the reluctance of growers to meet low prices that have ruled so far at this season’s Dominion sales. To-day’s catalogue comprised few lots of choice, well-grown clean wools in comparison with this sale of a year ago, the bulk of the offering showing signs of the .severe winter and late spring. There was offered a, fair proportion of wool held over from last year. In most cases this wool opened out in stained condition. There was a very full bench of buyers, and competition from the Continent was especially keen, while Bradford buyers also operated keenly on wools suitable for their requirements. For any super lots local mills were keen buyers. The market was firm on recent sales held in the South Island. The toil price at to-day’s sale was 9|d for a choice line of super halfbred.
