NO SUBSIDY FORTHCOMING

WORK FOR. RETURNED SOLDIERS. TELEGRAMS UNANSWERED. (By Telegraph—Press Association...) INVERCARGILL, Dec. IS. Sixty-two men, all returned! soldiers, employed on city works finished work this evening owing to the subsidy from the Unemployment Board not being forthcoming. The Unemployment Board through the Press asked local authorities to put works in hand before Christmas in order to provide wages to carry over the Christmas period. “In pursuance of that urge from the Unemployment Board,” stated the Mayor (Air J. D. Campbell) this morning, “the city council lodged applications immediately lor subsidies on various works in order to genuinely assist as far as possible. The council put work in hand immediately with the idea of enabling rnen to earn as much as possible before Christinas and to employ as many as possible. The works were quite unproductive and such as the council under ■ordinary circumstances would not undertake.

“The council lias sent three telegrams to the board requesting a decision, and: the- board lias been advised that number of men will have to be as the work-s cannot be proceeded with without subsidy. It is most disappointing that the council ■should receive no satisfaction when itlias undertaken so much and endangered its own finances in order to employ as many men as possible before Christmas. The board has apparently ignored the council’s- telegrams as no reply Ims been received.”
