MERCER’S SHOP RAIDED
BURGLARY AT NIGHT. CLOTHING AND CASH TAKEN. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Dec. 18. Clothing to the value of several hundred pounds and also two or three pounds in small cash was stolen from the mercer’s shop of Vance Vivian last night or early this morning. The interior of the premises presented a strange sight when one of the proprietors arrived this morning to open the shop, the stock having been thoroughly ransacked. Entrance was gained through the rear of the building, a., hole' being cut in a threeply wall big enough to enable a hand to be inserted and turn the door lock. On the first floor suits and other clothing were strewn all over the floor. Apparently all the stolen property had been fitted on and unwanted garments were thrown down. Dozens of the sto civ of silk dressing gowns were taken. A traveller’s sample case, which had been left in the building overnight, was used to remove the goods. At the moment it is difficult to estimate the total value of the stolen property.
