SURE CLUB

' On Wednesday evening was held a meeting of the Opunalte Surf Club, Mr. C. H. Mareroft precidmg iver a large attendance. y A letter from Miss Lily Copplestone offering her services should the club decide to hold a swimming carnival. After some discussion it was decided that the offer- be not accepted, the secretary being instructed to convey to Miss Copplestone the clubs appreciation of ■ her offer. . It was unanimously decided to forward a letter of appreciation of liis services to Dr. H. L. Bowell, who is shortly leaving the district. The matter qf the formation of a South Taranaki centre was further discussed and it was decided to notify the Patea Club that, owing to lack of interest shown .by other South Taranaki clubs, the matter be held in obeyanee for the time being.. The matter of the acceptance of the Patea Club’s invitation to a team to compete at their competition on New Year’s Day was left in the hands of the executive. A donation of half-a-guinea was received from Dr. H. L. Bowell. SEASIDE SOCIETY. At the special meeting of the Seaside Society held on Thursday evening several important matters were dealt with.

Regarding the alteration to the ladies’ dressing shed aud the kiosk, Mr. A. O’Brien reported that as requested he had met local builders and had found that several intended to tender.

As the secretary had reported that he had received only one tender, it was decided to leave the matter in the hands of a committee comprising Messrs. Sinclair, O’Brien and Fouhy. The matter of reclamation of the beach swamp was further dealth with and it was decided to proceed at once with the drawing up of plans and estimates for submission to the Public Works Department. The secretary was instructed to call tenders for the lease of the shops and tea-room in the new pavilion, which is nearing completion. GENERAL. At the New Theatre on Thursday evening a party of Hawera performers rendered a fine concert in aid of the Presbyterian Church funds. Owing probably to the fact that concerts have been rather frequent; of late, the audience was not as large as the fare offered deserved. However, what the audience lacked in size it was made up in appreciation. The Church of England bazaar was concluded on Tuesday evening, when another short concert was rendered. It was reported that the gross takings were in the vicinity of £IOO. The vicar, Rev, Farnell, in a short speech thanked all those who had assisted in bringing about this satisfactory result. ATHLETIC CLUB. The second evening meeting of the Athletic Club was held on Thursday evening, there being a good attendance of competitors and spectators. A euclire party in aid of the Catholic Church was held in St. Patrick’s Hall on Friday night. Prize-winners were: Ladies, Mrs. <D. J. Thomas 1, Mrs. Guild 2. Men, Mr. A. McCormack 1, Mr. R. Cairns 2.

BOWLING

6n Wednesday afternoon Opium ke scored their second win of the season by defeating Patea by 27 points. The following were the detailed scores, Opunake players mentioned first: Moron, Des Fox-ges, G. Fearer, Hannxxond, 22, v. Glenny Drummond, White, Shehan, 15. Johnston, Fake, Hindi, Burton, 28, v. Richards, Bowen, Bourke, Carey, 17.

At the conclusion of play Mr. P. Boui-ke thanked the Opunake club for its hospitality and extended an invitation to play at Patea. In reply, Mr. T. H. H. Sinclair referred to the sportsmanship of the Patea players, who, despite the very bad weather conditions, had come a long distance to play the match. The Opunake Club, he said, would he only too pleased to play a return match at an early date. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs. Sinclair and a band of helpers.
