THE CASTLE PLEDGE. I promise to smile every time I can, and to chase all tna frowns into the dark cave, where the Smile Giant will Mil them with his Magic Sword Happiness. My Dear Smiles, — I am very glacl to see a revival of interest, in the Gift Cupboard. Even some of my Smiles who have not written for a long time have remembered the Cupboard, including some who did some very good work last year. I received a gift to-day all the way from Te Kufti from a Smile who still remembers us. lam hoping that there will be a very good array of gifts to distribute among the children in hospital. I notice that the return to winter weather, which is so much disliked by the farmers, is becoming tiresome to you, too. It does seem a shame, doesn’t it, to be getting nothing but overcast skies, cold wind and rain in the month of November. One time we used to go to the Show in our summer best, but the last few years everybody has had to wear overcoats. It really does appear as though there may be some truth in the statements we hear about our seasons growing later. If this weather continues till Christmas there will not be much difference between New Zealand and English Christmas conditions. Of course, we all hope that the sun will drive the clouds away long before then and that we shall have real summer days for the holidays. I hope your gardens have not. suffered like the Castle garden has, especially during the last few weeks. The rose blooms have been very sadly treated by the wind and the wet weather has stopped much of the work that should be going on at present. However, we have not given up heart and mean to have a lovely autumn garden. Yours affectionately, SMILE QUEEN.
