In future before patients are admitted to the Wellington Hospital they will be required to sign a statement to the effect that they understand that the hospital does not accept any liability should they contract any disease while in the institution.

With the object of stabilising the buying market and protecting native growers the Government lias decided to impose an export, duty-on all bananas shipped from Samoa. The new duty which comes into, effect on January 1 will be at the rate of 2s 6d on each “Fiji” (large-sized) case and 2s on each “citrus” (smadl-sized) case. If he prefers the Administrator may impose a dutv at the rate of a farthing a pound •on the net weight of the fruit exported, this rate being enforced at his discretion. No exemptions will be allowed and the New Zealand Government will have to pnv the 7fu?> in common with other shippers. At present the Government is paying about 5s a case for bananas • so in the future at this price it will cost the Government 7s 6d to export large-sized eases. It is pointed out that as far as the administration of the duty is concerned it will not be passed on. to native growers. The Government will continue to pay natives the same price as it has in the liast regardless of the imposition o.f the tax.
