FLOODS AT OTAKI
RIVER OVERFLOWS BANKS LOSSES AMONG CATTLE FARMERS’ HEAVY LOSSES’. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) OTAKI, Nov. 27. The biggest Hood, for many years occurred at 1 o’clock this morning. The river overflowed its banks, drowned horses, cows and . sheep, swept away three temporary bridges, damaged vegetable gardens, entered houses in the vicinity of the Otaki railway, damaged the main road' and undermined the railway line for chains. .. The river and streams are still flooded. biit the water is rapidly subsiding. Hundreds of pounds’ damage was done by the flood and the debris on the beach is considerable. Stock of all descriptions were drowned. Hundreds of chains of fencing were washed away and several bridges and roads were severely damaged. Many settllers are very heavy losers. . . A general survey of the position is being made, but confirmation of the loss of stock cannot he obtained till the parties return from the other side of the river.
