TRIBUTE TO MR, BROOKES. (United Press Association- -By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) NEW YORK. Oct. 21. The “New York Times,” in an editorial, headed “Patriotic Sacrifice,” states that Mr. Herbert Brookes has resigned his position as Australian representative in the United States in order to sat e his country his salary and expenses of office. “Al'i who know the qualitv of bis service will regard this is poor economv for Australia, even n a time when 'it is necessary to cut expenditure. Mr, Brookes has established a reputation as an international statesman, and it is gratifying to know that he will proceed home bv slow stages across the country, coining m touch especiallv with university centres. Mr. Brookes, by his personal sacrifice, will not imperil any goodwill which he has won here for Australia. Rather does his 1 act prompt the hope that conditions will be so improved at home that the office will soon bo rc-yr-ened with Air. Brookes once more as High Commissioner.”
