The amount of Australian coal imported iby the Railway Department was the basi® of a return furnished to the House yesterday at the request of the leader of the Labour Party, Mr. H. E. -to!land. Mr. Holland desired to ascertain the quantity imported since the termination of the dispute on the northern coalfields of New South Wales. The return showed that the amount impended in June was 13,319 tons and in July 5396 tons, a total of 18.715 tons. The quantity was exclusively Port Kembla screened coal. The total amount quoted was the balance of orders placed on February- 29 and May 19 last prior to the reopening of the Newcastle mines.

The weather conditions, for Labour Day week-end are not promising for a variety of holida-v attractions arranged throughout the province, and possibly the attendances at outdoor fixtures may be affected. The annual round-the-mountain road cycle race is being held to-day, with the finish at the New Plymouth racecourse. Competitors from all over the Dominion are participating. Several inter-club bonding matches have been arranged and rinks from the New Plymouth dub were to visit Hawera. Cricket competitions will continue in the South and this evening the wrestling bout at Stratford will be an attraction. The Ha-wera Golf Club’s tournament opened to-day with excellent entries and will be continued over the week-end and on Monday. The Waverley races on Monday will in all probability be well attended, and if the weather should clear the 'beaches will no doubt have their share of popularity. An organised movement- >bas' again been made in the -direction: of a -comprehensive scheme of hydro-electricity from Lakes Hawea- and Wa-naloa for the Upper Clutha Valley. A 'representative meeting of delegates from the leading local bodies in the district held at Cromwell on Wednesday decided to urge oin the Government the necessity of immediately -proceeding with a survey of all possible schemes from this source, and to- gather all information relating thereto. Points made by various speakers- were -that this -source of power was immune from the dangers associated with many other schemes already given preference, and that .the .solution of irriga : tion of over '50,000 acres in ■ the valley was from this source. A strong committee was formed to push the question and the resolution adopted is to be forwarded to the Government and to all members for Otago. One of the proposals is to drive a tunnel through the •hillside separating the two lakes, Hawea being considerably higher above sea level than Wanaka.
