OIL DILUTION
I KNK.MY OK TH 1C K.NOINK. L Oil dilution is one of the worst ' enemies of an engine. Moving parts ’ are protected by a film of oil which prevents metal coming into contact 1 with metal, when lubrication is perfect-. A film of oil and gasoline will ' not serve the purpose. An valves are ; closed on two of the four .strokes which form the cycle of an engine. One is the compression strente and the other the power stroke. It piston rings do not fit as they should, part ot the gasoline vapour will pass the rings as the compression increases. Too rich a mixture is responsible for much dilution. The engine is given more. gasoline than it can burn in a sharp, clean explosion, and part of it passes the rings on both the compression and power strokes. Dilution is more rapid in winter than summer because an engine is hard to warn up, and the driver has a gjenter tendency to use the »-hoke 100 much. Fresh oil shows up well' on the oil ; gauge, but cold oil, regardless of its dilution, will keep the needle over ( against the peg, too. Oil may he testeel between the fingers, if it is diluted ] it can be ‘ felt- through” as the fingers j are rubbed together. If it is good the ( fingers are really separated by it. (
