SOUTH TARANAKI TEAMS OPENING OF SEASON The season has commenced well and keen enthusiasm was shown on Saturday in the various*fixtures, senior and junior, despite the unfavourable weather conditions. There was much excellent play in all departments, bub especially in batting. Players are, however, advised to get more fielding practice, because faulty work in the field means runs to the opposing side and because dropped catches often are the margin between victory and defeat arid likewise spoil the bowlers’ averages. * * * * *

- Old Boys B made a capital debut and pleased their supporters very much. Although they were not up against the strongest team, their ecore of 209 for four wickets was reallv excellent under any circumstances. All four batsmen scored well and Cheevers, in his best form, was unbeaten. The opening wicket partnership between the Barker brothel's was in every way admirable and a great asset to the team. ■X- * * ** “

P’iiton made a- gallant effort in the face of the adverse light, which towards the end of the afternoon was very marked. It is a Question whether the umpires would not have been justified in closing play somewhat earlier. Palmer played an invaluable innings for Patea, showing very stubborn defence and at times an ability to hit hard. He was strongly supported by Petersen and Gibbs, the former playing one of his characteristically breezy, hard hitting innings that delight the spectators. * ■ •* * * *

Pacey came through with excellent bowling figures, which, with more accurate work in the field, would have been still better. ■K * * * *

Hawera also opened the season in' great style against Stratford on the latter’s ground. Nielsen and Crombie rattled up 84 before the former fell to a good catch by the bowler. It was very good indeed to see Nielsen out once more in his accustomed place in the team. He is too young to take to bowls, and it only needs enthusiasm among the players generally to keep him at cricket, which is the game he loves best. * * * * *

High School team includes a number of very young players and 'they were no match for Olcainwa with their seasoned players. Still, some of the youngsters did well. Surgenor and Thrush are to lie commended for their plucky stand in the first innings, and Sugar’s 13 not out at the end of the second innings was a bright spot in the match. « * - -* * *

Ok a haw a opened well. Penny and Betts putting on 40 runs for the first Avioket" but Whitehead Avas in fine howling form and secured three Avio-ket-s very cheaply, getting. Atkins and Eden without a run being scored. Crawford, Murdoch and Linn made a good stand, but the rest did little, and it is to he noted that 96 -of the total of 105 were made by six of the batsmen .

WEST INDIES VISIT Eii route to Australia the. West Indies row. team will play a- match in Wellington next month. They have several very fine players, including Constantine, a man with a world-wide reputation. Among the team aro also several natives of the islands.
