LOCAL AND PERSONAL

The funeral of the late l Mrs. P. O’Connor, of Mana.ia, took place yesterday afternoon, leaving the Catholic Church for the Manaia cemetery. There was a large attendance of friends and sympathisers to pay their last respects to deceased, who was highly esteemed v all who knew her. The pall bearers were Messrs. John. James and Thomas j’Oonnor, J. Hammersley, R. Nolan and D. Hennessey. Rey. Fathers O’Beirne, Manaia, and McDermott, of Eltham. officiated at the church and graveside. The funeral was attended by the brothers of the Manaia branch of the Hibernian Society. Many beautiful wreaths were placed on the casket.

The trout fishing tackle of one of a, party of Ilawera. anglers who recently visited the Tvnnpokonni provided sport- which though, not according to Izank Walton, was to the onlookers at least quite as exhilarating as the playing- of a prize .specimen of the streams. After piecing his rod. together, the particular angler had: fastened to the cork hand grip a minnow which was attached to the line. Awaiting the other members of the party, he. was musing doubtless, concerning the sleek fifteen-poumclier toi be landed some day when the whirr of the' reel interrupted the reverie and he found that the minnow, flying free in the wind, had taken in the head by a belligerent goat. Copying piscatorial custom, Billy made off with thd bait. Many moments, hilarious for the spectators but anxious ones for the owner of the tackle, who thjrciiigh'out maintained possession of the rod, were occasioned before tire chase ended and the minnow and line word returned. The story of the angler who wanted trout but landed a goat ended with the discard of the catch which, however, was treated with considerably more, respect, than that accorded unwanted smalil fry in returning them to their element.
