COUNTRY WOMEN'S INTERESTS

INSTRUCTIVE AFTERNOON The increase in the us-e of electricity in the home in the country districts of South Taranaki ha® been marked since the local board began it® operations. In. order to give _ the- women of the country 'an! opportunity of seeing the latest in cooking methods, the- Women’,s Division of the Farmers’ Union asked the Power Board to arrange for a demonstration in cooking such as- is carried on in most households.

The board got in touch with Mr MeOlag. agent for McClairy ranges, and as the -outcome an expert from Wellington, Mrs Reid, was engaged to e oniQ to Hawera and give a demonstration. This took place in the Winter Show Buildings yesterday afternoon. Mrs 11. J. Finlay, co-operating with Mrs W. E. Carter, president of .the Division in South Taranaki, made the preliminary arrangements and in response to invitations' issued, about, 80 ladies from Hawera, Manga-told, Auroa, Tokaora, Normanby, Whareroa, Okaiawa, Mama-ia, and! Norma,nby gathered m the upper room of the Winter Show Buildings. Mr« W. E. Carter, in giving a cordial welcome to the instructress, said that the visit would be moist useful and instructive to the women of the district, many of whom had jusit secured electric light and power in- the hcruse and on the farm. She instanced the remarkable growth of electric ranges in New Zealand from 14,966 in 1928 to 25,997 in 1930, the percentage in. proportion to consumers "being 0.14 per cent., and in South Taranaki 1.08 per cent.

Mrs Reid then gave a demonstration of cooking, putting on a whole family meal and Mr MeClag explained the action of the electricity in- the work of cooking. After afternoon tea had been served, Mrs Carter cordially thanked all who had assisted the division, the. beard’s officers, Messrs Overtoil and Baigent, the demonstrators, Mr and Mrs- Finlay, for their hospitality to visitors. •She mentioned in conclusion that a talk on the Pan-Pacific Conference 1 would be given!,at Hawera on November .1 by Miss Allen-, of New Plymouth, who had been to Honolulu as a. delegate from the women’s societies of the Dominion.
