How R.ufus, the British treasury eat, recently secured a 50 per cent, increase or allowance on account of the higher cost to living is told in entertaining detail in a London newspaper. The high treasury official noticed a mouse scampering down a, oorrider —with jk> Rufus in pursuit! The grave matter was brought to the attention of another official, and the general opinion was ft at. Ud a day was not enough to provide a hunting cat with sustenance. The lords of the treasury rejected a ■suggestion that Rufus should have another penny a day, ibut Dame Maude Lawrence, head of the women in the civil service, enlisted the sympathy of Mr. Snowden, chancellor of t'>o exchequer, who has a fondness for animals. A second minute went to ihe chancellor, and was noted, after an interview with Rufus—“ Treasury volt ; | Approve increase of cat’s pay.’’
