FINDING A WIFE

THANKS TO A MAYOR

SUCCESS" Having been married as the result oi the ‘‘matrimonial bureau” which the Mavor of Southend, England, opened following a request from a Halifax man to be piiti in touch with a woman with a- view to matrimony, a- resident ol Tooting, whose initials, are “W.J., thus written to the Mayor saying, “xoui scheme has been 100 per cent, successful in my case.” The writer, who; formerly lived at Peterborough was ail applicant to the bureau in March. “My letter to you,’ he states, “was the starting-point for me of a most successful romance, and 1 am now most happily married to a relation of one of your lady applicants ” The letter continues: “The oldfashioned way of making an acqnainance in church is as dead as nails. My wife was tied up in the service of semi-, aristocracy, off-duty-, time practically nilj and 1 was on the railway. What chance had we to meet in the ordinary) course ?

“I never or hardly ever met anyone worthy of a second glance, an.di niy wife maintains she only met male servants whom she did not think worthy or suitable in any way to her tastes. “There "is nothing in this' letter meant to offend anyone, but to bring a feeling of satisfaction to those who participated in your wonderful scheme. My wife was not aware actually how I became acquainted with her relation, but now it is all over I have told her.

“I wish people were more broadminded. as I am «ure many men and women drift through life alone and eventually are unwanted. It is a position to be dreaded and for those ill obscure jobs their chances of meeting the right one a rev meagre.”
